From the new moon to the full moon the Moon is waxing, and folk tradition says that hair cut in these two weeks grows back faster, so this is the time chosen by people who are growing their hair out. From the full moon to the next new moon the Moon is waning: a cut is said to grow back more slowly and keep its shape longer, which suits short, precise haircuts and fringes.

The day of the new moon is the one day almost every folk calendar agrees on: no haircut. In July 2026 the new moon falls on 14 July. About the full moon tradition is divided.
