- 432 Hz is a tuning in which the note A above middle C is set to 432 Hz instead of the standard 440 Hz; the difference is 31.77 cents, a little less than a third of a semitone.
- In a study of 33 healthy volunteers the heart rate was 4.79 beats a minute lower after 20 minutes of music tuned to 432 Hz than after the same music at 440 Hz.
- In a trial with 42 patients before a tooth extraction salivary cortisol was 0.49 μg/dL with 432 Hz music, 1.35 μg/dL with 440 Hz music and 1.59 μg/dL without music.
- In 12 patients with spinal cord injuries the sleep score improved by 3.6 after the period with 432 Hz music and did not improve after the period with 440 Hz music.
- In two studies, of 28 kickboxers and of 22 male athletes, music in both tunings improved performance compared with no music, and 440 Hz did better than 432 Hz.
- The standard of 440 Hz was agreed in London in May 1939 and confirmed in 1975 as ISO 16; before that France had fixed the note A at 435 Hz by law in 1859.
What is 432 Hz
432 Hz is a tuning. The note A above middle C, called A4, is set to 432 Hz instead of the standard 440 Hz, and every other note moves down with it. It is not a separate healing tone and not one of the solfeggio frequencies.
The distance between the two tunings is 31.77 cents, a little less than a third of a semitone (a semitone is 100 cents). Music in 432 Hz sounds slightly lower and, to many listeners, softer. It is the same music, not a different one.
Most people hear the difference when the two tunings are played one after the other. Heard alone, a piece in 432 Hz cannot be told from a piece in 440 Hz by most listeners, because few people have absolute pitch.
| Note | A4 = 432 Hz | A4 = 440 Hz |
|---|---|---|
| A4 | 432 Hz | 440 Hz |
| C4 (middle C) | 256.87 Hz | 261.63 Hz |
| C5 | 513.74 Hz | 523.25 Hz |
| A3 | 216 Hz | 220 Hz |
| A2 | 108 Hz | 110 Hz |
| E3 | 161.82 Hz | 164.81 Hz |
The generator at the top of the page shows the frequency of A4 and C5 in the tuning you choose.
432 Hz frequency benefits: what studies found
432 Hz has real studies in people, more than any solfeggio tone. The most useful of them played the same music in two tunings, so that the tuning was the only thing that changed. Seven studies did this.
| Who listened | What was compared | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 33 healthy volunteers, Italy, 2019 | 20 minutes of the same film music at 432 Hz and at 440 Hz, on two days | Heart rate 4.79 beats a minute lower with 432 Hz |
| 12 patients with spinal cord injuries, Italy, 2020 | Favourite music for 30 minutes a day, a period at 432 Hz and a period at 440 Hz | Sleep score improved significantly with 432 Hz and did not improve with 440 Hz |
| 54 emergency healthcare workers, Italy, 2022 | 432 Hz music, 440 Hz music or a break without music | Anxiety fell in all three groups; breathing rate and systolic blood pressure fell only with 432 Hz |
| 42 patients before a tooth extraction, Chile, 2020 | 15 minutes of 432 Hz music, 440 Hz music or no music | Both tunings halved the anxiety; cortisol was significantly lower with 432 Hz |
| 43 cancer patients, Germany, 2025 | 15 minutes with a body monochord tuned to 432 Hz and to 443 Hz | Heart rate fell by 3 beats a minute with 432 Hz and by 1 beat with 443 Hz |
| 28 kickboxers, 2025 | Preferred music at 432 Hz and at 440 Hz during the warm-up, and no music | Both tunings improved the test results; 440 Hz gave the best performance and mood |
| 22 male athletes, 2025 | Preferred music in both tunings during the warm-up, and no music | Both tunings improved performance; the benefit was more noticeable at 440 Hz |
Five of the seven studies measured calm, and in all five the body settled more with 432 Hz: a slower heart, slower breathing, lower cortisol, a better sleep score. The two studies of sport went the other way. The full numbers, tuning by tuning, are on the page about 432 Hz vs 440 Hz.
Other studies compared 432 Hz music with no music. They do not show that 432 Hz is better than 440 Hz; they show that calm 432 Hz music works. In Italy 100 patients had lower blood pressure and a lower heart rate during root canal treatment with 432 Hz music than without music. In Turkey 90 patients listened for 10 minutes before wisdom tooth surgery: anxiety fell significantly with 432 Hz music and with binaural beats, and not in the control group. In Pakistan 99 patients waiting for root canal treatment were divided into three groups of 33: 432 Hz music and binaural beats reduced anxiety equally well, and both did better than white noise.
The limits are the same for all of them. The studies are small, 12 to 100 people, and several are pilot studies by the same Italian group. None lasted longer than a few weeks. Larger studies are needed.
What is 432 Hz good for
The studies point the same way: music tuned to 432 Hz calms the body a little more than the same music at 440 Hz. That gives four practical uses.
- Calm during the day. Emergency healthcare workers listened to 432 Hz music in their work break. Their breathing rate fell by 2.7 breaths a minute and their systolic blood pressure by 3.8 mmHg.
- Before sleep. In a nap study of 15 men who usually fall asleep slowly, 432 Hz music raised the alpha activity of the brain at sleep onset, a sign of calm. The routine for the evening is on the page about 432 Hz for sleep.
- Anxiety before a procedure. Patients who listened to music for 15 minutes before a tooth extraction had anxiety scores of 8.7 with 432 Hz and 8.4 with 440 Hz, against 17.2 without music. Cortisol, the stress hormone, was lowest with 432 Hz.
- Meditation. The volunteers of the first Italian study were more focused on the music and more satisfied after the 432 Hz sessions. A full session is on the page about 432 Hz meditation.
For sport and movement the result is the opposite. In two studies athletes warmed up with their preferred music in both tunings, and 440 Hz gave the better performance. If you train, keep the standard tuning.
The sessions in the studies were short: 10 to 30 minutes of quiet music, once a day or once before the event.
Is 432 Hz a healing frequency
Supporters call 432 Hz a healing frequency, and many playlists carry the label 432 Hz healing music.
What is shown is more modest and more useful. Music in this tuning lowered heart rate, breathing rate, blood pressure and cortisol in small studies. No study has shown that 432 Hz heals a disease. The claim about repairing DNA belongs to 528 Hz in the solfeggio tradition and is not shown for either.
A large part of the effect belongs to music itself. A review of 104 randomised trials with 9,617 participants found that music reduces stress, with a medium effect on how people feel and a smaller one on the body, clearest in the heart rate. The tuning adds a little to that.
432 hertz meaning: the significance of 432 Hz
For its supporters 432 Hz is the natural tuning. The tradition links it with calm, with the Earth and with the order of the universe.
The significance is built on numbers. 432 is 2⁴ × 3³, a number with many divisors, so it turns up in many calculations. Supporters round the resonance of the Earth to 8 Hz, multiply it by 54 and get 432. They point to the scale in which middle C is 256 Hz, a power of two, and the note A comes out at 432 Hz. They find the number in the golden ratio, in the speed of light and in sacred geometry.
These are patterns of numbers, and they say nothing about the sound. What 432 Hz does have is a real history in music, the support of Giuseppe Verdi, and studies in which the lower tuning calmed the listeners. That is a meaning you can check.
Where 432 Hz comes from: Verdi tuning and scientific pitch
The oldest root is scientific pitch. In 1713 the French physicist Joseph Sauveur proposed setting middle C to 256 Hz, so that every C is a power of two: 1, 2, 4 and so on up to 256 and 512. With C at 256 Hz the note A comes out at exactly 432 Hz in Pythagorean tuning, because 256 × 27:16 = 432. In equal temperament the same C gives A = 430.54 Hz.
The second root is Giuseppe Verdi, who wanted to stop the rise of pitch. He wrote his Requiem of 1874 for the French standard of 435 Hz and later said that 432 Hz would be slightly better for orchestras. This is why 432 Hz is called Verdi tuning.
The modern movement began in 1988, when the Schiller Institute, an organisation of the American political activist Lyndon LaRouche, started a campaign to make Verdi tuning the standard. The claims about healing and about the universe spread on the internet in the 21st century.
432 Hz tuning and concert pitch: why the standard is 440 Hz
For centuries there was no standard. Pitch differed from town to town and from organ to organ. Surviving French tuning forks give A = 390 Hz in 1795 and A = 449 Hz in 1855; a fork of 1822 gives 432 Hz.
In the 19th century pitch kept rising, because higher tuning sounds more brilliant. It strained singers' voices, and largely because of their protests the French government fixed A at 435 Hz by law in 1859.
In May 1939 delegates of five countries met in London and agreed on A = 440 Hz. The International Organization for Standardization confirmed it in 1975 as the standard ISO 16. It is an agreement that lets instruments made in different countries play together.
The full history, with all the dates and the question whether pitch was ever changed from 432 to 440, is on the page about 432 Hz vs 440 Hz.
Earth frequency 432 Hz and five other myths
Six claims travel with 432 Hz. Here is what is known about each.
- “432 Hz is the frequency of the Earth.” The Earth's electromagnetic resonance, the Schumann resonance, has its base frequency at about 7.83 Hz. Supporters round it to 8 Hz and multiply: 8 × 54 = 432. With the real value the result is 7.83 × 54 = 422.8 Hz. More is on the page about the Schumann resonance.
- “432 Hz is the forbidden frequency.” Nobody has forbidden it. Any musician may tune to 432 Hz, and some do.
- “440 Hz was imposed by the Nazis.” No evidence supports it. 440 Hz was recommended in Germany in 1834 and was the informal American standard from 1926. The page about 432 Hz vs 440 Hz tells the story of the London meeting.
- “Ancient instruments were tuned to 432 Hz.” Historical pitch varied widely, from below 400 Hz to above 450 Hz. 432 Hz is one of many values found, not a lost ancient standard.
- “432 Hz follows the golden ratio.” The golden ratio, the speed of light and sacred geometry are number patterns. 432 has many divisors, which makes such patterns easy to find.
- “Water forms more beautiful patterns at 432 Hz.” One pilot study (Stoilov and colleagues, 2022) measured water after sound with near-infrared light, and 432 Hz and 440 Hz had similar effects. Pictures of water crystals are not evidence.
How to listen to 432 Hz with the generator
The generator has a switch between two tunings and three sounds. A first session takes five minutes.
- Press Play. The generator opens in the 432 Hz tuning with the note A and a 15-minute timer.
- Switch the tuning to 440 Hz while the sound plays, then back. The sound changes at once. The generator shows the distance from the standard: 31.8 cents lower.
- Choose the chord for longer listening. It is built of the notes A, E and A in a low register, 108, 161.82 and 216 Hz, and it swells and fades once every 12 seconds.
- Choose the melody to hear the tuning in music: the opening four bars of the Prelude in C major by Johann Sebastian Bach, repeated.
- Add a binaural beat to the note or the chord if you like: 2 Hz (delta), 6 Hz (theta) or 10 Hz (alpha). The left ear hears the tone and the right ear the tone plus the beat, so you need headphones.
- Switch on the quiet brown noise if the tone feels bare. Set the volume low and the timer to 5, 15, 30 or 60 minutes. At the end the sound fades out gradually.
432 hertz pure tone or 432 Hz music
A 432 hertz pure tone is simply the note A, 32 cents lower than the A of standard tuning. Its wave in air is 79 centimetres long; the wave of 440 Hz is 78 centimetres. A pure tone is the clearest way to compare the two pitches.
432 Hz music is something else: a whole piece in which every note is tuned from A = 432 Hz. In the studies people listened to music, not to a pure tone. The tone and the chord of the generator are a way to hear the tuning. If you want the effects that were measured, quiet music is the closer match.
432 Hz guitar tuning: how to tune with a 432 Hz tuner
A guitar in 432 Hz keeps the standard tuning E A D G B E. Every string is set 31.77 cents lower, so the chords and the fingering stay the same. You do not need a special 432 Hz tuner: an ordinary tuner with a changed reference does the work. The table below the steps gives the frequency of each string.
- Open the settings of your electronic tuner or tuner app and find the reference pitch, often called calibration. Most tuners have it, usually in the range 410 to 480 Hz.
- Change the reference from 440 to 432.
- Tune every string as usual.
- If your tuner has no such setting, tune normally and then lower every string until the tuner shows about 32 cents flat.
| String | A4 = 432 Hz | A4 = 440 Hz |
|---|---|---|
| E2 (6th) | 80.91 Hz | 82.41 Hz |
| A2 (5th) | 108 Hz | 110 Hz |
| D3 (4th) | 144.16 Hz | 146.83 Hz |
| G3 (3rd) | 192.43 Hz | 196 Hz |
| B3 (2nd) | 242.45 Hz | 246.94 Hz |
| E4 (1st) | 323.63 Hz | 329.63 Hz |
The strings become slightly slacker. If you play with other people, all the instruments have to use the same reference.
432 Hz tuning fork: how to use it
A 432 Hz tuning fork gives the note A of the 432 Hz tuning. Musicians use it as a reference for tuning by ear; in sound therapy it is used for relaxation. The standard fork that musicians have used for generations gives 440 Hz.
- Strike the fork on a rubber activator or on the knee, never on a hard surface.
- Hold an unweighted fork a few centimetres from the ear.
- Place a weighted fork, the kind with discs on the prongs, with its stem on the body.
- Listen until the sound fades. A fork sounds for 20 to 40 seconds.
The studies on this page used music and a string instrument, not a tuning fork. The benefits of a 432 Hz tuning fork have not been measured separately.
Where to find 432 Hz music and how to convert 440 to 432 Hz
Streaming services and video sites have playlists labelled 432 Hz. The label cannot be checked by ear. Some pieces are recordings lowered by 1.82 %, and some were recorded in that tuning.
You can also make your own. Any recording in standard tuning can be retuned in an audio editor by lowering the pitch by 31.77 cents, which is 1.82 %. There are two ways to do it.
| Method | What changes | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Slow the recording down by 1.82 % | Pitch and tempo together | A piece of 3 minutes becomes about 3 seconds longer |
| Change the pitch and keep the tempo | Pitch only | The length of the piece stays the same |
The generator on this page does not play recorded music and does not convert your files. It makes its own sound, so that you can hear the tuning itself.
Is 432 Hz safe: adults, babies, children and pets
No study has described a harm of 432 Hz. Hearing is harmed by loudness and duration, not by a particular frequency: the World Health Organization considers sound of up to 80 dB safe for 40 hours a week.
For sleep keep the volume low, use the timer and do not spend the whole night with earbuds pressed into the ear. With a binaural beat you need headphones. Do not listen to a beat while driving, and if you have epilepsy talk to your doctor first.
432 Hz for babies, children, dogs and cats: no study of 432 Hz exists for them. The general rule is low volume and a speaker at a distance. Never put headphones on a baby or an animal.

Questions people ask
What is 432 Hz?
432 Hz is a tuning in which the note A above middle C is set to 432 Hz instead of the standard 440 Hz. All other notes move with it, so the music sounds 31.77 cents lower, a little less than a third of a semitone.
What is 432 Hz good for?
For calming down. In studies music tuned to 432 Hz lowered heart rate, breathing rate and cortisol a little more than the same music at 440 Hz. People use it in the evening, before sleep, before a medical procedure and for meditation.
Is 432 Hz a healing frequency?
Supporters call it one. Studies show that music in this tuning calms the body a little more than the same music at 440 Hz. No study has shown that 432 Hz heals a disease.
What are the benefits of 432 Hz for anxiety?
In a trial with 42 patients 15 minutes of music before a tooth extraction halved the anxiety score in both tunings, and cortisol was significantly lower with 432 Hz. In trials with 90 and 99 dental patients 432 Hz music reduced anxiety compared with the control group.
Is 432 Hz the frequency of the Earth?
No. The Schumann resonance of the Earth is about 7.83 Hz. Supporters round it to 8 Hz and multiply by 54 to get 432; with the real value the result is 422.8 Hz.
Is 432 Hz a solfeggio frequency?
No. A solfeggio frequency is a single tone, and 432 Hz is a tuning of the note A from which all other notes follow. The solfeggio tones are described on the page about solfeggio frequencies.
How do I tune a guitar to 432 Hz?
Set the reference of your tuner from 440 to 432 and tune every string as usual. Without that setting tune normally and then lower every string until the tuner shows about 32 cents flat. The fifth string is then 108 Hz instead of 110 Hz.
How do I convert 440 Hz music to 432 Hz?
Lower the pitch of the recording by 1.82 %, which is 31.77 cents, in an audio editor. If you do it by slowing the recording down, a piece of 3 minutes becomes about 3 seconds longer.
Is 432 Hz safe for babies and dogs?
No study of 432 Hz exists for babies, children, dogs or cats. Keep the volume low, play the sound through a speaker at a distance and never put headphones on a baby or an animal.
Where can I find 432 Hz music?
Streaming services and video sites have playlists labelled 432 Hz. The label cannot be checked by ear: some pieces were recorded in that tuning and some are standard recordings lowered by 1.82 %.

The generator makes the sound in the browser (Web Audio). On this page it starts in the tuning A4 = 432 Hz with the note A as a pure tone and a 15-minute timer. It plays three sounds: the note A, a chord of the notes A, E and A (108, 161.82 and 216 Hz in the 432 Hz tuning) and the opening four bars of the Prelude in C major by Johann Sebastian Bach (BWV 846). The frequencies of all notes are computed in equal temperament from A4 = 432 Hz or A4 = 440 Hz. With a binaural beat the left channel carries the tone and the right channel the tone plus the beat. Nothing is a recording.
