- 432 Hz is a tuning in which the note A is 432 Hz instead of 440 Hz; 528 Hz is a single solfeggio tone, 16 cents above the note C5 of standard tuning.
- The two tones are 347 cents apart, between a minor third and a major third; their frequencies relate as 9 to 11.
- In 33 healthy volunteers the heart rate was 4.79 beats a minute lower with music at 432 Hz than with the same music at 440 Hz.
- In 9 healthy adults five minutes of piano music tuned to 528 Hz lowered cortisol and raised oxytocin; music at 440 Hz did not.
- One trial tested both: in 162 students 20 minutes of 528 Hz music raised the markers BDNF and CREB, 432 Hz music raised the marker GRP78, and the attention test did not differ.
- With A tuned to 444 Hz the note C5 is 528 Hz; with A tuned to 432 Hz it is 513.74 Hz.
432 Hz vs 528 Hz: the difference in short
432 Hz names how a whole piece of music is tuned. 528 Hz names one pitch. That is the whole difference, and most confusion about the two numbers comes from missing it.
In the 432 Hz tuning the note A above middle C is set to 432 Hz instead of the standard 440 Hz, and all other notes move with it. Any piece of music can be played this way. 528 Hz is a tone of the solfeggio set, and music can only be tuned so that it contains this tone.
| 432 Hz | 528 Hz | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A tuning: the pitch of the note A, from which all other notes follow | A single tone |
| Origin | Giuseppe Verdi said that 432 Hz would be slightly better for orchestras; the modern movement began in 1988 | The solfeggio tradition of sound therapy |
| Name in the tradition | The natural tuning, Verdi tuning | The love frequency |
| Nearest note | A4, 31.77 cents below the standard 440 Hz | C5, 16 cents above the standard 523.25 Hz |
| Studies in people | Heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, cortisol, anxiety, sleep | Cortisol, oxytocin, heart rate, blood pressure, sleep |
| Best supported use | Calm music in the evening and before a stressful event | A short break from stress, daily chanting |
528 Hz and 432 Hz: how they sound
The player on this page has two pure tones. 432 Hz is the note A, 32 cents lower than in standard tuning. 528 Hz is higher and brighter: it lies 16 cents above the note C5 of standard tuning, the C that follows this A.
The distance between them is 347 cents, about three and a half semitones. In music this is an interval between a minor third and a major third. The frequencies relate as 9 to 11.
A pure tone is not music in 432 Hz. The tone shows you the pitch of one note. The softness that listeners describe belongs to whole pieces played in that tuning, and in the studies people listened to music.
- Play 432 Hz for half a minute, then 528 Hz. Notice which one you would rather keep in the background.
- Move the slider from 432 Hz to 440 Hz and back. This small step, 31.77 cents, is the whole difference between the 432 Hz tuning and the standard.
- Move the slider from 514 Hz to 528 Hz. The first is the note C5 of the 432 Hz tuning, 513.74 Hz rounded; the second is the solfeggio tone, about 47 cents higher.
The slider covers 100 to 1000 Hz, so you can also hear 444 Hz, the tuning in which the note C is 528 Hz.
432 Hz vs 528 Hz frequency benefits: what studies found
432 Hz has more studies in people than any solfeggio tone. 528 Hz has two. In all of them people listened to music or chanting, not to a bare tone.
| Measure | 432 Hz | 528 Hz |
|---|---|---|
| Heart rate | 4.79 beats a minute lower than with 440 Hz in 33 volunteers; fell by 3 beats in 43 cancer patients | Lower after a month of daily OM chanting at 528 Hz in 60 patients |
| Breathing rate | 1 breath a minute lower in 33 volunteers; fell by 2.7 breaths in emergency healthcare workers | No result in the studies described here |
| Blood pressure | Systolic pressure fell by 3.8 mmHg in emergency healthcare workers | Lower after a month in 60 patients with stage 1 hypertension |
| Cortisol | 0.49 μg/dL against 1.35 μg/dL with 440 Hz in 42 dental patients | Fell after five minutes of piano music in 9 adults |
| Oxytocin | No result in the studies described here | Rose after five minutes of piano music in 9 adults |
| Sleep | Sleep score improved by 3.6 points in 12 patients; not with 440 Hz | Improved after a month in 60 patients |
| Sport | 440 Hz gave better performance than 432 Hz in 28 kickboxers and in 22 athletes | No result in the studies described here |
| Compared with | Mostly the same music at 440 Hz or 443 Hz | Music at 440 Hz in the first study; no listening in the second |
The last row decides how much a result says. When the same music is played in two tunings and the body responds differently, the tuning is the reason. When the control group listens to nothing, the result shows that the practice helps and cannot show that the frequency is the reason.
All these studies are small. The studies of 432 Hz had 12 to 100 participants, several are pilot studies by the same Italian group, and none lasted longer than a few weeks. The first study of 528 Hz had 9 participants. Larger studies are needed.
432 Hz vs 528 Hz effects: the one study that tested both
One trial put the two side by side. It was done in Turkey and published in 2026. In an exam period 162 healthy students were randomly divided into three groups. For 20 minutes one group listened to 528 Hz instrumental music, one to 432 Hz instrumental music, and one to no music. Saliva was tested, and the students took the Stroop test of attention.
With 528 Hz music two markers linked with learning and memory, BDNF and CREB, were higher in saliva than in the control group. With 432 Hz music another marker was higher: GRP78, which is linked with the cell's response to stress.
The results of the attention test did not differ between the groups. So the two kinds of music left different traces in the body, and neither changed performance at once.
432 Hz vs 528 Hz for sleep
Each has one study in which sleep improved, and the two studies are not equally strong.
432 Hz: twelve patients with spinal cord injuries listened to their favourite music for 30 minutes a day. After the period with 432 Hz the sleep score improved by 3.6 points (p = 0.02). After the period with the same music at 440 Hz it did not improve. In another study 432 Hz music raised the alpha activity of the brain at sleep onset in 15 men who usually fall asleep slowly.
528 Hz: sixty patients with stage 1 hypertension listened to OM chanting at 528 Hz every day for a month, and their sleep improved. The control group listened to nothing, so the study cannot separate the tone from the daily quiet practice.
For sleep the evidence for 432 Hz is clearer. In the player choose 432 Hz, the delta beat of 2 Hz, the brown noise and the timer of 30 minutes. A softer sound for the night, a low chord in the 432 Hz tuning, is on the page about 432 Hz for sleep.
432 Hz or 528 Hz for anxiety and stress
For anxiety before a medical procedure 432 Hz music was tested several times. Before a tooth extraction 15 minutes of music halved the anxiety score: 8.7 with 432 Hz and 8.4 with 440 Hz against 17.2 without music. The tuning made the difference in the stress hormone: cortisol in saliva was 0.49 μg/dL with 432 Hz and 1.35 μg/dL with 440 Hz.
In three more dental studies, with 100, 90 and 99 patients, 432 Hz music was compared with no music or with white noise. Anxiety, blood pressure or heart rate were lower with the music.
For 528 Hz the measured effect is fast. In nine healthy adults five minutes of piano music tuned to 528 Hz lowered cortisol and raised oxytocin, and music at 440 Hz did not.
| Situation | Better supported | How |
|---|---|---|
| Before a dentist, an exam, a hard talk | 432 Hz music | 10 to 15 minutes of quiet music, as in the dental studies |
| A break in a working day | Either | 432 Hz music lowered breathing rate and blood pressure in emergency healthcare workers; 528 Hz music lowered cortisol in five minutes |
| Tension in the evening | 432 Hz music | 20 to 30 minutes, the lengths used in the studies of heart rate and sleep |
432 Hz or 528 Hz for meditation
Here the choice is about the kind of practice. The studies measured listening, and the only one that compared the two frequencies measured saliva and attention, not meditation.
432 Hz suits a practice with music or a chord in the background: the sound is low and soft, and the body slows down with it. The tradition links 432 Hz with calm.
528 Hz suits a practice with one tone as the object of attention. The tradition calls it the love frequency and uses it for transformation, love and harmony.
With the theta beat of 6 Hz the player gives 432 Hz to the left ear and 438 Hz to the right ear, or 528 Hz and 534 Hz. The beat needs headphones. Full sessions are on the page about 432 Hz meditation and on the page about 528 Hz.
Is 432 Hz a solfeggio frequency
No. 432 Hz is not a solfeggio frequency and not a separate healing tone. It is a tuning of the note A. 528 Hz is a solfeggio tone.
People think otherwise for three reasons.
- The two numbers stand side by side. Both appear as labels on music for relaxation and sleep, so they look like two tones of one set.
- Both are measured against 440 Hz. The studies of 432 Hz and the first study of 528 Hz used music at 440 Hz as the comparison.
- The claims travel. The claim about repairing DNA belongs to 528 Hz in the solfeggio tradition, and it is often repeated about 432 Hz. It is not shown for either.
The whole set of tones is described on the page about solfeggio frequencies, and the tuning on the page about 432 Hz.
432 Hz vs 444 Hz: the tuning in which C is 528 Hz
444 Hz is a tuning too. When the note A is set to 444 Hz, the note C5 comes out at 528 Hz. This is why the 444 Hz tuning is linked with the solfeggio tone 528 Hz: music tuned this way contains that tone.
So the fair comparison of tunings is 432 Hz against 444 Hz, one below the standard and one above it.
| Tuning | Note A4 | Note C5 |
|---|---|---|
| A = 432 Hz | 432 Hz | 513.74 Hz |
| A = 440 Hz, the standard | 440 Hz | 523.25 Hz |
| A = 444 Hz | 444 Hz | 528 Hz |
The studies on this page compared 432 Hz with 440 Hz or 443 Hz, not with 444 Hz.
528 Hz and 432 Hz together: can you combine them
Not in one piece of music. Music tuned to 432 Hz does not contain the tone 528 Hz: its nearest note is C5 at 513.74 Hz, and 528 Hz lies about 47 cents above it, almost a quarter of a tone. A 528 Hz tone over such music sounds out of tune.
You can combine them in time, and many people do.
- During the day: five minutes of 528 Hz, the length used in the study of cortisol.
- In the evening: 20 to 30 minutes of quiet music in 432 Hz.
- In one sitting: start with the tone you find brighter and end with the one you find calmer.
If you want music that contains 528 Hz, it has to be tuned to 444 Hz.
432 Hz or 528 Hz: which to choose
Choose by what you want from the sound. Where the studies give no answer, choose by ear.
| You want | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| To fall asleep more easily | 432 Hz | The sleep score improved with 432 Hz and not with 440 Hz |
| To calm down before a stressful event | 432 Hz | Lower cortisol and a lower heart rate than with the same music at 440 Hz |
| A short reset during the day | 528 Hz | Cortisol fell after five minutes of 528 Hz music |
| One tone for meditation | The one you like | In the trial of both neither changed attention |
| A practice in the solfeggio tradition | 528 Hz | It is a solfeggio tone; 432 Hz is not |
| Music for a warm-up before sport | 440 Hz | In two studies athletes performed better with 440 Hz than with 432 Hz |
Are 432 Hz and 528 Hz safe
No study has described a harm of 432 Hz or of 440 Hz. For any tone, 528 Hz included, the rule is the same: hearing is harmed by loudness and duration, not by a particular frequency. The World Health Organization considers sound of up to 80 dB safe for 40 hours a week.
With a binaural beat use headphones, do not listen while driving, and if you have epilepsy talk to your doctor first. Neither frequency has been shown to heal a disease, so sound does not replace treatment.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between 432 Hz and 528 Hz?
432 Hz is a tuning: the note A is set to 432 Hz instead of 440 Hz and all other notes move with it. 528 Hz is a single tone of the solfeggio set, 16 cents above the note C5 of standard tuning.
Which is better, 432 Hz or 528 Hz?
It depends on the aim. 432 Hz has more studies, and they show a calmer body and better sleep scores. 528 Hz music lowered cortisol in five minutes in a study of 9 adults.
Is 432 Hz or 528 Hz better for sleep?
The evidence is clearer for 432 Hz: in 12 patients the sleep score improved with 432 Hz and not with the same music at 440 Hz. With 528 Hz sleep improved in 60 patients, but the control group listened to nothing.
Is 432 Hz a solfeggio frequency?
No. 432 Hz is a tuning of the note A. 528 Hz is a solfeggio tone.
What is the difference between 432 Hz and 444 Hz?
Both are tunings of the note A. With A at 444 Hz the note C5 is 528 Hz, which links that tuning with the solfeggio tone. With A at 432 Hz the note C5 is 513.74 Hz.
Can I listen to 528 Hz and 432 Hz together?
Not in one piece of music, because music tuned to 432 Hz does not contain the tone 528 Hz. You can use them at different times: 528 Hz for a short break, 432 Hz music in the evening.
Has any study compared 432 Hz and 528 Hz?
One, with 162 students. After 20 minutes of 528 Hz music the markers BDNF and CREB were higher in saliva, after 432 Hz music the marker GRP78 was higher, and the attention test did not differ between the groups.
Does 432 Hz or 528 Hz repair DNA?
The claim belongs to 528 Hz in the solfeggio tradition. It is not shown for either frequency.

The player makes the sound in the browser (Web Audio). On this page it opens with two pure tones, 432 Hz and 528 Hz, and a slider for any frequency from 100 to 1000 Hz. With a binaural beat the left channel carries the tone and the right channel the tone plus 2, 6 or 10 Hz. The frequencies of the notes and the distances in cents are calculated in equal temperament from A4 = 432 Hz or 440 Hz; one semitone is 100 cents. Nothing is a recording.
