432 Hz music for sleep: a soft chord with a timer

Lie down and press Play: the generator is set to the 432 Hz tuning, a low chord that swells and fades, a 2 Hz delta beat, quiet brown noise and a 30-minute timer. In a study of patients who listened for 30 minutes a day, sleep improved with music tuned to 432 Hz and did not improve with music tuned to 440 Hz. Below: what the studies found, an evening routine, a plan for one week and the mistakes that spoil the effect.

  • Switch the tuning while the sound plays: it changes at once, and you hear the difference yourself.
  • With a binaural beat headphones are required: each ear must hear its own tone.
Key facts
  • In a study of 12 patients who listened to music for 30 minutes a day, the sleep score improved by 3.6 points with the 432 Hz tuning (p = 0.02) and did not improve with 440 Hz.
  • In 33 healthy volunteers 20 minutes of music at 432 Hz gave a heart rate 4.79 beats a minute lower than the same music at 440 Hz.
  • In a nap study of 15 men who usually fall asleep slowly, 432 Hz music raised the alpha activity of the brain at sleep onset, a sign of calm.
  • 432 Hz is a tuning: the note A is set to 432 Hz instead of 440 Hz, which makes all music 31.77 cents lower.
  • The sleep setting plays a chord of 108, 161.82 and 216 Hz with a 2 Hz delta beat: for the lowest note the left ear hears 108 Hz and the right ear 110 Hz.
  • The timer fades the sound out after 30 minutes, the length of daily listening in the sleep study.

Does 432 Hz help you sleep

Yes, according to the studies done so far, and the effect is modest. Music tuned to 432 Hz calms the body a little more than the same music at 440 Hz, and in one study it improved sleep.

That study comes from Italy and was published in 2020. Twelve patients with spinal cord injuries listened to their favourite music for 30 minutes a day, in one period tuned to 432 Hz and in another tuned to 440 Hz. The study was double-blind: the patients did not know which tuning they heard. After the period with 432 Hz the sleep score improved by 3.6 points, a significant change (p = 0.02). After the period with 440 Hz it did not improve (a change of minus 1.50, p = 0.34).

A second study looked at falling asleep itself. In India 15 healthy men who usually fall asleep slowly took a daytime nap with 432 Hz music and without it. With the music the alpha activity of the brain rose significantly at sleep onset, a sign of calm. The time needed to fall asleep became a little shorter, but that difference was not significant.

The other studies did not measure sleep. They measured what comes before it: a slower heart and slower breathing. Their numbers are in the next section.

The limits are these. The studies are small, from 12 to 100 people, several are pilot studies by the same Italian group, and none lasted longer than a few weeks. Larger studies are needed.

Why 432 Hz for sleep: the benefits measured in the body

Falling asleep is a slowing down. The pulse drops, breathing becomes slower and more even, the muscles let go. When the body keeps its daytime pace, sleep does not come, however tired you are.

This slowing is what the studies of 432 Hz measured. In each of them people listened quietly for 15 to 20 minutes or during a break, and their pulse, breathing or saliva were tested.

MeasureWho listenedResult with 432 Hz
Heart rate33 healthy volunteers, 20 minutes of film music4.79 beats a minute lower than with 440 Hz
Heart rate43 cancer patients, 15 minutes of a string instrument placed against the bodyFell by 3 beats a minute; by 1 beat with 443 Hz
Heart rate variabilityThe same 43 patientsRose only with 432 Hz
Breathing rate33 healthy volunteers1 breath a minute lower than with 440 Hz
Breathing rate54 emergency healthcare workers, music in the work breakFell by 2.7 breaths a minute; it did not fall with 440 Hz or without music
Cortisol in saliva42 dental patients, 15 minutes of music0.49 μg/dL; 1.35 μg/dL with 440 Hz; 1.59 μg/dL without music

A slower pulse does not put you to sleep by itself. It brings the body to the state from which sleep starts, and that is the job of an evening sound.

432 Hz sleep music with no ads: the sleep setting of the generator

The generator makes the sound in your browser. There are no ads in the middle of the night, and no next video starts when the sound ends. The page opens with the sleep setting, so you can press Play and change nothing.

  • Half an hour before bed dim the lights and put the phone on silent.
  • Get into bed first. The sound is the last thing you start, not something you hear while finishing the day.
  • Put on headphones if you use the delta beat. Without headphones switch the beat off.
  • Press Play and lower the volume until the chord is barely audible.
  • Put the phone face down, out of reach.
  • Close your eyes. For the first minutes breathe in while the chord swells and out while it fades.
  • Then stop following the sound. After 30 minutes it fades out by itself.

432 Hz frequency for sleep with a delta beat

A binaural beat is made of two tones that differ slightly, one in each ear. In the sleep setting the left ear hears the chord as it is, and the right ear hears every note 2 Hz higher. Delta is the slowest band of brain rhythms, the one of deep sleep, which is why this beat is chosen for the night.

Note of the chordLeft earRight ear
A, the lowest note108 Hz110 Hz
E161.82 Hz163.82 Hz
A, an octave higher216 Hz218 Hz

The beat exists only in headphones, because each ear must hear its own tone. Through a speaker the two tones mix in the air.

If headphones disturb your sleep, switch the beat off and play the chord with the brown noise through a speaker at arm's length from the pillow. You lose little: in the studies of 432 Hz people listened to music without any beat.

With a beat do not listen while driving, and if you have epilepsy talk to your doctor first. More about beats is on the page about binaural beats for sleep.

432 Hz deep sleep music: chord, tone or music

The generator has three sounds, and your own music is the fourth choice.

SoundWhat you hearFor sleep
The chordThe notes A, E and A in a low register, swelling and fadingThe best choice in bed: low, slow, with no melody to follow
The note AA pure tone of 432 HzPlain and bright; good for hearing the tuning, less good for falling asleep
The melodyThe opening four bars of the Prelude in C major by Johann Sebastian Bach, repeatedFor the quiet half hour before bed; it plays without a beat
Your own music in 432 HzCalm pieces recorded in this tuning or lowered to itThe closest match to what the studies used

In the studies people listened to music, not to a pure tone: film music, their favourite pieces. The chord and the tone of the generator are a way to hear the tuning. For the measured effects quiet music is closer.

The generator does not play recordings and does not convert your files. Streaming services have playlists labelled 432 Hz. The label cannot be checked by ear: some pieces were recorded in that tuning, some are recordings lowered by 1.82 %. You can retune any recording yourself in an audio editor by lowering the pitch by 31.77 cents.

How long and how loud to listen

How long: 30 minutes. That was the daily dose in the sleep study. The calming effects on pulse and cortisol appeared after 15 to 20 minutes, so a shorter session is not wasted.

How loud: as quiet as you can still hear. Hearing is harmed by loudness and duration, not by a particular frequency. The World Health Organization considers sound of up to 80 dB safe for 40 hours a week, and a sound for sleep should stay far below that.

Do not let the sound play all night. The timer has four lengths, and each ends with a gradual fade-out.

TimerWhen to use it
5 minutesTo try the sound and set the volume
15 minutesA short rest during the day
30 minutesFalling asleep in the evening, the default
60 minutesIf you usually lie awake for a long time

432 Hz for sleep: a plan for one week

One evening says little. In the sleep study the change was measured after a period of daily listening, 30 minutes every day. Give the sound a week at the same hour before you judge it.

EveningWhat you doWhat to expect
1The sleep setting as it is, 30 minutesA calmer body. In the study of 33 volunteers one session of 20 minutes was enough for a lower heart rate. Sleep itself may not change yet
2 and 3The same hour, the same volumeThe sound becomes familiar and stops drawing attention
4 and 5Try one change: no beat and a speaker, or your own quiet music in 432 HzYou find the version that disturbs you least
6 and 7Keep the version you choseThe routine itself becomes a signal that the day is over
After a weekCompare your notes with an ordinary weekJudge by the average, not by the best night

Notes take a minute each morning. Write down how long it took to fall asleep, how many times you woke up and how rested you feel on a scale from 1 to 5. Add coffee after noon and late screens, because they change sleep more than any sound.

If nothing has changed after two weeks, this sound is not your tool. That is a useful result too.

432 Hz or 528 Hz, binaural beats or brown noise for sleep

The four are different things, and each has its own evidence.

What it isHeadphonesEvidence for sleepBest when
432 HzA tuning of music, 32 cents below the standardNot neededSleep score improved in 12 patients; 440 Hz music did not improve itYou want calm music or a soft chord in the evening
528 HzA single solfeggio toneNot neededSleep improved in 60 patients after a month of daily OM chanting at 528 Hz; the control group listened to nothingYou like a brighter tone or chanting
Binaural beatsTwo tones that differ by a few hertz, one in each earRequiredDescribed on the page about binaural beats for sleepThe room is quiet and the mind keeps running
Brown noiseAn even, low noiseNot neededNot tested in the studies on this pageThe room is noisy

The difference in evidence matters. The study of 432 Hz compared two tunings of the same music, so it says something about the tuning. The study of 528 Hz compared listening with no listening, so it cannot separate the tone from the habit of a quiet half hour.

You do not have to choose one. The sleep setting of this page combines three of them: the 432 Hz tuning, a delta beat and brown noise. More detail is on the page about 528 Hz, the page about 432 Hz vs 528 Hz and the page about binaural beats for sleep.

432 Hz sleep meditation: breathing with the chord

A sleep meditation hands the evening over from thinking to breathing. The chord gives the rhythm: it swells and fades once in 12 seconds, which makes five breaths a minute.

  • Lie on your back with your arms beside the body.
  • Breathe in through the nose while the chord swells, and out while it fades.
  • If five breaths a minute feel too slow, take two breaths to one cycle for the first minutes.
  • On each out-breath let one part of the body grow heavy: feet, legs, belly, chest, arms, shoulders, face.
  • When thoughts come, return to the chord. Do not try to fall asleep; let sleep come.

A sitting practice for the daytime is on the page about 432 Hz meditation.

432 Hz for babies and children

No study of 432 Hz exists for babies or children. What was measured in adults cannot simply be carried over to them.

If you want to play quiet music in 432 Hz in a child's room, follow the general rules for any sound.

  • Low volume, lower than you would choose for yourself.
  • A speaker at a distance from the bed, never headphones on a baby.
  • No binaural beat. It needs headphones, so it is not for babies.
  • A timer, so that the child sleeps in silence.

If a baby or a child sleeps badly for a long time, talk to the child's doctor.

Mistakes that spoil the effect

Most disappointments come from the way of listening, not from the sound.

  • Too loud. Loudness does not deepen calm, and it tires the ears. The chord should be barely audible.
  • A screen in bed. Choosing tracks and reading messages wakes you more than any chord can calm you. Start the sound and put the phone away.
  • Earbuds all night. Do not sleep with earbuds pressed into the ear. Use the timer, flat sleep headphones or a speaker.
  • The beat through a speaker. Without headphones the binaural beat disappears; switch it off and keep the chord.
  • A different hour every evening. The body learns a routine only when it repeats.
  • A verdict after one night. Sleep differs from night to night with or without sound.

When sound is not enough

Sound cannot outweigh the things that set sleep in the first place: daylight in the morning, a dark and cool bedroom, no coffee in the afternoon, the same bedtime every day.

Sleep problems that last need a doctor. If you have slept badly for weeks, if you snore loudly with pauses in breathing, or if you are very sleepy during the day, start there.

Music in 432 Hz is a way to calm down in the evening. It has not been shown to treat insomnia or any disease.

Questions people ask

Is 432 Hz good for sleep?

In a study of 12 patients who listened for 30 minutes a day, the sleep score improved by 3.6 points with music tuned to 432 Hz and did not improve with 440 Hz. The study is small, and larger ones are needed.

Does 432 Hz make you sleepy?

It calms the body. With 432 Hz music the heart rate was 4.79 beats a minute lower than with 440 Hz, and in a nap study the alpha activity of the brain rose at sleep onset. The time needed to fall asleep became a little shorter, not significantly.

Why 432 Hz for sleep and not 440 Hz?

In the studies that compared the two tunings of the same music, 432 Hz lowered heart rate, breathing rate and cortisol more than 440 Hz, and only 432 Hz improved the sleep score. No harm of 440 Hz has been shown.

How long should I listen to 432 Hz sleep music?

30 minutes, the daily length used in the sleep study. Use the timer so that the sound fades out by itself.

Do I need headphones for 432 Hz sleep music?

Only for the delta beat. The chord, the brown noise and any music in 432 Hz can be played quietly through a speaker.

Is 432 Hz or 528 Hz better for sleep?

Both have one study in which sleep improved. The study of 432 Hz compared it with the same music at 440 Hz; the study of 528 Hz compared daily OM chanting with no listening. So the evidence for the tuning itself is clearer for 432 Hz.

Is 432 Hz safe for babies?

No study of 432 Hz exists for babies. If you play it, keep the volume low, place the speaker at a distance and never put headphones on a baby.

Can I play 432 Hz music all night?

It is better not to. Set the timer to 30 or 60 minutes, and do not sleep with earbuds pressed into the ear all night.

Is this 432 Hz sleep music free and without ads?

Yes. The sound is made in your browser, with no ads and nothing to download. It is a generated chord, not a recording.

How this page is made

The generator makes the sound in the browser (Web Audio). On this page it starts in the 432 Hz tuning with the chord of the notes A, E and A (108, 161.82 and 216 Hz), a 2 Hz delta beat (for the lowest note 108 Hz in the left ear and 110 Hz in the right ear), a background of brown noise and a 30-minute timer with a gradual fade-out. The frequencies of the notes are calculated in equal temperament from A4 = 432 Hz or 440 Hz. Nothing is a recording, and all values can be changed.
