What is a lunar haircut calendar?

A lunar haircut calendar is a folk calendar that ties the day of a haircut to the phase of the Moon. Its main rule is simple: hair cut while the Moon is waxing is said to grow back faster, and hair cut while the Moon is waning is said to grow back more slowly and hold its shape longer. The day of the new moon and the lunar days 9, 15, 23 and 29 are traditionally avoided. It is a tradition, not a finding of science: there is no evidence that hair grows at a different rate depending on the Moon.

The rule behind every lunar haircut calendar is the direction of the Moon. From the new moon to the full moon the Moon is waxing, and folk tradition says that hair cut in these two weeks grows back faster, so this is the time chosen by people who are growing their hair out. From the full moon to the next new moon the Moon is waning: a cut is said to grow back more slowly and keep its shape longer, which suits short, precise haircuts and fringes.

Haircut on a new moon and on a full moon

The day of the new moon is the one day almost every folk calendar agrees on: no haircut. In July 2027 the new moon falls on 4 July. About the full moon tradition is divided. Some calendars recommend a cut on that day for thickness, others advise waiting a day, so this calendar marks the full moon day (18 July) as neutral unless it falls on a difficult lunar day.
