Hunting calendar, April 2027: best days, feeding times and seasons

By the solunar tables the best hunting days in April 2027 are 5–7 and 19–21 April, around the new and the full moon. For every day the movement times are computed for Vancouver: the two major periods, when the Moon is overhead and underfoot, and the two minor ones around moonrise and moonset. In season this month in Lithuania: beavers, wild boar, foxes, pheasants. Below: the rut months, the hours game actually moves, the bright and dark nights, and what the camera-trap studies say about the Moon.

Key facts · April 2027
  • In April 2027 the solunar tables mark 5–7 and 19–21 April as the best days and 3–4, 8–9, 17–18 and 22–23 April as good; the weakest, around the quarters, are 12–14 and 26–30 April.
  • In season in Lithuania in April 2027: beavers, wild boar, foxes, pheasants.
  • The times are computed for Vancouver: the Moon overhead and underfoot (major periods, two hours), moonrise and moonset (minor periods, one hour).
  • Bright nights (the Moon at least 60 % lit) in April 2027: 19–21 April. Camera traps show deer move more by night on bright nights and wild boar avoid them.
  • Dawn and dusk are the hours: red deer, roe deer and moose feed in the first and last light whatever the Moon does; the rut moves the males by day as well.
  • The seasons are the law of the Medžioklės taisyklės (point 15.2); the solunar rating is a hunters' tradition, and the calendar keeps the two apart.

What is a solunar hunting calendar?

The solunar tables of John Alden Knight (published 1936) were made for fish and adopted by hunters within a few years: the two hours around the Moon's passage overhead and underfoot are the "major periods", the hour around moonrise and moonset the "minor periods", and the best days lie around the new and the full moon. Hunters use them for deer, moose and wild boar as feeding-time tables. The tables are a tradition, not a measured law: the camera-trap studies below show a real but different effect of the Moon, through its light. This page gives the tradition as a tradition, the astronomy exactly for your city, the Lithuanian seasons from the rules, and the science with its sources.

What is in season in April 2027

April is the quiet month: beavers to the 15th, pheasants to the 30th, wild boar and foxes. The forest belongs to the nesting birds and the calving hinds. Hunters count the game, mend the high seats and wait for May.

The word in each day is the solunar rating: best around the new and full moon, weak around the quarters. Moon phases are the same everywhere; the times in the table below are computed for Vancouver (America/Vancouver). The small number is the lunar day.

Solunar movement times in April 2027, Vancouver: day by day

Every day with its rating, moonrise and moonset, the two major and two minor periods, sunrise and sunset for Vancouver, and whether the night is bright or dark. A period marked "dawn or dusk" falls within an hour of sunrise or sunset: that is the hour the tradition and the science agree on. About once a month a period is missing, because the lunar day is 24 hours 50 minutes long.

Driven hunts, wolves and the limits

Driven hunts (medžioklė varant) are allowed in Lithuania 15 October – 31 January (rules, point 15.1); foxes, raccoon dogs, mink, martens and polecats may be driven outside forests to 31 March. Wolves and golden jackals are hunted from 15 October to 31 March or until the year's wolf quota is filled, after which the season is closed early. Moose, red deer, fallow deer, roe deer, wild boar and badger are licensed game with yearly limits set by the ministry. The first and the last day of a season count.

What the studies actually show

Two camera-trap studies measure what the Moon does to game. Ladine & Settles (Southeastern Naturalist, 2020) counted white-tailed deer at night over four years in Texas: 578 detections around the full moon against 232 around the new moon, and the fewest on overcast new-moon nights, so deer move more by night when there is more light. Gordigiani et al. (Mammal Research, 2021) found the opposite in wild boar in central Italy: the boar, which see poorly and are hunted and preyed on by wolves, avoided the brightest nights, and their night activity peaked in mid-autumn, when hunting pressure is highest and the leaf fall sends them ranging for food. Nothing in the literature supports the exact hours of the solunar periods for game. What is well established is that deer are crepuscular, feeding in the first and last light; that the rut moves the males by day; and that pressure from hunting pushes every species deeper into the night. So: bright nights for deer feeding at night and quieter dawns after them; dark nights for wild boar; the rut for the stags; the solunar rating to choose between days, not to stay home.

How to read the table

Take the season first: only what is open may be hunted, and the calendar shows the Lithuanian seasons by species and sex. Then the rating: best and good days are worth planning for, weak ones are still hunting days. Then the periods: two hours around the Moon overhead and underfoot, one hour around moonrise and moonset; when one falls on sunrise or sunset it is the hour to be on the stand. The night column tells you whether the coming night is bright or dark: for deer at night take the bright ones, for boar the dark ones. Sit through the whole period.

Weather, wind and snow: what matters more than the Moon

Hunters' rules of thumb, stated as such: a steady barometer and a light, constant wind are good; the first cold snap after a warm spell moves the deer; a falling barometer before a front sends the game to feed early; the day after a storm is quiet. Rain and snow matter more than the Moon: fresh snow shows tracks and moves the boar and foxes; a hard crust keeps the deer to the forest. The measured part: deer activity rises when the temperature falls in autumn and drops in the heat and in deep snow; wild boar feed most in the mild, dark, wet nights of autumn. A thermometer and the wind direction tell more than the calendar.

The solunar rating is a hunters' tradition. The Moon and Sun times are computed astronomy; the seasons are quoted from the rules with their date and do not replace them. Check the current rules and the limits of your hunting area.

Questions people ask

Which are the best hunting days in April 2027?

5–7 and 19–21 April 2027: the days around the new moon and the full moon. Good days: 3–4, 8–9, 17–18 and 22–23 April. The weakest, around the quarters: 12–14 and 26–30 April.

What are deer feeding times?

By the solunar tables the two hours when the Moon passes overhead and underfoot (major periods) and the hour around moonrise and moonset (minor periods); the table gives them for Vancouver for every day. By the studies, deer feed most in the first and last hour of light, and in the rut the stags move by day too. When a solunar period falls at dawn or dusk, both agree.

Does the Moon affect deer and boar?

Through its light, yes. White-tailed deer were counted at night two and a half times more often around the full moon than the new moon (Ladine & Settles 2020); wild boar avoided the brightest nights (Gordigiani et al. 2021). Whether the solunar hours themselves matter has never been shown. Use the phase for the nights, the light for the species, and the rut and the weather for the rest.

Is the full moon good for hunting?

Deer feed more by night on bright nights and may come to the field edges later at dawn; wild boar do the opposite and move on the dark nights. Bright nights this month: 19–21 April; the new moon on 6 April gives the darkest ones.

When is the moose season and the rut?

Moose in Lithuania: males 15 August – 15 December; females 1 October – 30 November; young 1 October – 31 January. The rut is in September. Most hunted in September–November; they move at dawn and dusk; moonlight: moves more by night on bright nights.

When is the red deer season and the roar?

Red deer in Lithuania: males 15 August – 28 February; females 1 September – 15 January; young 1 September – 15 January. The rut is in September–October. Most hunted in September–December; they move at dawn and dusk; moonlight: moves more by night on bright nights.

When may roe bucks be hunted?

Roe deer in Lithuania: males 1 May – 31 October; females 1 October – 31 December; young 1 October – 31 December. The rut is in July–August. Most hunted in May–August and October–November; they move at dawn and dusk; moonlight: moves more by night on bright nights.

When is wild boar hunted?

Wild boar in Lithuania: all year. The rut is in January and November–December. Most hunted in January and August–December; they move at night; moonlight: avoids the brightest nights.

When is the fallow deer season?

Fallow deer in Lithuania: males 1 October – 31 March; females 1 October – 31 January; young 1 October – 31 January. The rut is in October–November. Most hunted in October–December; they move at dawn and dusk; moonlight: moves more by night on bright nights.

When are driven hunts allowed in Lithuania?

Driven hunts (medžioklė varant) are allowed in Lithuania 15 October – 31 January (rules, point 15.1); foxes, raccoon dogs, mink, martens and polecats may be driven outside forests to 31 March. Wolves and golden jackals are hunted from 15 October to 31 March or until the year's wolf quota is filled, after which the season is closed early. Moose, red deer, fallow deer, roe deer, wild boar and badger are licensed game with yearly limits set by the ministry. The first and the last day of a season count.

What is a solunar period?

A period of the day when, by the theory of John Alden Knight (1936), animals feed most: the two hours around the Moon's passage overhead and underfoot are the major periods, the hour around moonrise and moonset the minor ones. The times depend on the place, which is why the calendar asks for a city.

Why is a period missing on some days?

The Moon rises about 50 minutes later every day, so its day is 24 hours 50 minutes long. About once a month a moonrise, a moonset or an overhead passage falls after midnight and belongs to the next calendar day.

How this page is made

The Moon's position is computed from the truncated series of Meeus; moonrise, moonset and the two transits are found by scanning the day every ten minutes (within about two minutes). The rating is the distance of the day from the nearest new or full moon. Sunrise and sunset use the NOAA solar equations. Seasons are quoted from the rules; rut and activity months are the usual pattern of the Baltic region.
