Moon planting calendar, February 2027: best days to sow and plant

By the folk lunar calendar the days to sow above-ground crops in February 2027 are 8–14, 17–20 and 25–27 February, on the waxing Moon, and the days for root crops and planting are 3–4, 13–14 and 22–27 February, on the waning Moon. Below it: what to sow and plant this month with real dates, soil temperatures and frost, the day-by-day table, the crop table for the whole year and what science says about the Moon and seeds.

Key facts · February 2027
  • In February 2027 the folk lunar calendar sows leafy and fruiting crops on 8–14, 17–20 and 25–27 February and root crops on 3–4, 13–14 and 22–27 February.
  • Days the tradition keeps free of sowing in February 2027: 5–6, 15 and 21 February (new moon, full moon and the difficult lunar days).
  • The new moon is on 6 February 2027 and the full moon on 21 February 2027.
  • The real dates come from the soil, not the Moon: potatoes go in at a soil temperature of 8 to 10 °C, beans at 12 °C, cucumbers outdoors at 15 °C; tender crops go out after the last spring frost, in Lithuania from 25 May.
  • In February 2027 the Moon passes through the signs Sagittarius (1–2), Capricorn (3–4), Aquarius (5–7), Pisces (8–9), Aries (10–12), Taurus (13–14), Gemini (15–16), Cancer (17–18), Leo (19–20), Virgo (21–22), Libra (23–24), Scorpio (25–27), Sagittarius (28); water signs are leaf days, earth signs root days, air signs flower days and fire signs fruit days.
  • A lunar planting calendar is a folk tradition; a 2020 review in the journal Agronomy found no reliable evidence that the phase of the Moon affects germination or yield.

What is a moon planting calendar?

A moon planting calendar is a folk calendar that ties sowing and planting to the phase of the Moon. Its rule is old and simple: crops that bear above the ground (lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes, beans, flowers) are sown while the Moon waxes, from the new moon to the full moon; crops that grow below the ground (carrots, potatoes, onions, garlic) and everything that is planted or transplanted go in while the Moon wanes. The last days before the new moon are for weeding, pruning and clearing, and the days of the new moon, the full moon and the difficult lunar days 9, 15, 23 and 29 are left free. The Old Farmer's Almanac has printed the same rule for two centuries. This calendar uses only the phase, the quarter and the lunar day; it does not use the zodiac signs of the biodynamic calendars.

What to sow and plant in February 2027

February opens the windowsill season: peppers and aubergines need 70 to 80 days before they go out, so they are sown from the middle of the month, with extra light. Petunias and other slow annual flowers follow; pansies sown now bloom in spring. Leeks and celeriac go in too. On frost-free days at the end of the month fruit trees are pruned.

Waxing or waning moon: the four quarters of the month

The lunar month has four quarters of about seven days. Tradition gives each its own work: in the first, from the new moon to the first quarter, leafy crops and herbs; in the second, to the full moon, the crops that bear above the ground, tomatoes, cucumbers, peas and beans, and flowers; in the third, from the full moon to the last quarter, root crops, bulbs and everything that is planted or transplanted, because growth is said to go into the roots; in the fourth, to the new moon, no sowing at all: weeding, pruning, pest control and clearing. The cards show the quarters of this month.

The Moon in the zodiac signs in February 2027

The Moon passes through all twelve signs in a month, two to three days in each (tropical signs, the Moon's position at 12:00 Europe/Vilnius). Gardeners' calendars give each sign an element and a kind of day: water signs are leaf days, earth signs root days, air signs flower days, fire signs fruit days. They also sort the signs by fertility: in a fertile sign everything sown is said to take, in a barren sign only weeding and pest control are done.

Planting by the signs: what each sign means in the garden

This is the second layer of the folk calendar, the one that the biodynamic calendars of Maria Thun made famous. It is tradition, not science, and this page combines it with the phase: the phase gives the direction (above ground on the waxing Moon, below on the waning), the sign refines the day. Where they disagree, the sign's day type is still marked favourable, and a barren sign holds back sowing even on a good phase.

SignDay typeFertilityWhat the tradition does
Ariesfruit daybarrenA fire sign, barren. Fruit day by element, but the tradition sows little in Aries: weeding, pest control, harvesting fruit for immediate use.
Taurusroot dayfertileAn earth sign, fertile. Root day: carrots, beetroot, potatoes, onions; also planting trees and shrubs, which are said to root well.
Geminiflower daybarrenAn air sign, barren. Flower day, and a day for cutting flowers, weeding and thinning; sowing is put off.
Cancerleaf dayfertileA water sign, the most fertile. Leaf day: lettuce, cabbage, spinach, herbs; also a good day for transplanting and watering.
Leofruit daybarrenA fire sign, barren. Fruit day by element, but the tradition uses Leo for weeding, cutting hay and lawns, and pruning to slow growth.
Virgoroot dayhalf-fertileAn earth sign, half-fertile. Root day for root crops and a day for planting flowers and shrubs; vegetables sown in Virgo are said to run to leaf.
Libraflower dayhalf-fertileAn air sign, half-fertile. Flower day: sowing and planting flowers, bulbs and ornamentals; also vines and pods.
Scorpioleaf dayfertileA water sign, fertile. Leaf day: greens and herbs, tomatoes and cucumbers under glass; a strong day for transplanting.
Sagittariusfruit daybarrenA fire sign, barren. Fruit day by element; the tradition sows onions and garlic for storage here and otherwise weeds and clears.
Capricornroot dayhalf-fertileAn earth sign, half-fertile. Root day: potatoes, beetroot, root crops for storage, garlic and bulbs in autumn; pruning.
Aquariusflower daybarrenAn air sign, barren. Flower day by element, but the tradition sows nothing in Aquarius: weeding, pest control, harvesting for storage.
Piscesleaf dayfertileA water sign, fertile. Leaf day: greens, herbs and cabbage; a day for watering and planting out, though roots lifted in Pisces are said to store badly.

Sowing on a new moon and on a full moon

The day of the new moon is a rest day in every folk calendar: nothing is sown or planted. In February 2027 the new moon falls on 6 February. The day of the full moon is kept free of sowing too, but it is the traditional day for harvest: fruit and herbs picked at the full moon are said to keep their flavour, and roots lifted after it to store better. The full moon in February 2027 is on 21 February.

Lunar days 9, 15, 23 and 29: the days tradition skips

Folk lunar calendars count the days of the lunar month from the new moon and call the 9th, 15th, 23rd and 29th difficult: no sowing, no planting, only light work. In February 2027 these are 5, 15 and 21 February. Together with the new moon and the full moon they make the rest days of the month: 5–6, 15 and 21 February.

Frost dates: when it is safe to plant out

In Lithuania the last spring frost usually falls between 10 and 25 May, and tender crops, tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes, beans and peppers, go outside only after it, in practice from 25 May to 5 June. The first autumn frost comes in late September or early October. Elsewhere shift every date by your own last frost: Central Europe about two weeks earlier, the north of Russia and Kazakhstan the same as Lithuania or later, the south earlier. Fleece over a bed gains a week at each end of the season.

Soil temperature decides more than the date

Seed germinates by temperature, not by the calendar. Peas and broad beans start from 2 to 4 °C, carrots and parsley from 4 to 5 °C but slowly, beetroot from 8 to 10 °C, potatoes are planted at 8 to 10 °C at 10 cm depth, beans need 12 °C, cucumbers, courgettes and pumpkins 15 °C. A soil thermometer at 10 cm, read in the morning for three days, tells you more than any date. Days to germination at a good temperature: radish 3 to 5, cucumber 3 to 6, lettuce 4 to 8, tomato 6 to 10, beetroot 7 to 14, pepper 8 to 14, carrot 10 to 20, parsley 14 to 25. Seedlings need this long before planting out: peppers and aubergines 70 to 80 days, tomatoes 55 to 65, cabbage 40 to 50, cucumbers and courgettes 20 to 30.

Does the moon affect plants? What science says

There is no reliable evidence that the phase of the Moon changes germination or yield. A review published in the journal Agronomy in 2020 went through the physical and biological claims behind lunar planting: the Moon's light, gravity and tides are far too weak at the scale of a seed to act on it, and the agricultural studies that report an effect do not stand up to scrutiny. What decides germination and yield is soil temperature, moisture, day length, frost, seed age and variety, and the dates in this calendar come from these. The tradition itself is old: Pliny the Elder gave moon rules for sowing and pruning in the first century, and gardeners' calendars print them every year. Use it as a way to plan the month, not as a law of nature.

This page describes a folk tradition together with ordinary horticultural dates. It is not agronomic advice for a particular field or variety.

When to plant garlic?

Winter garlic is planted 20 September – 15 October, two to three weeks before the frost, when the soil has cooled to about 10 °C. Favourable days by the moon: 20 and 28 September; 6–7 October. Spring garlic goes in 1–20 April.

When to plant onions?

Onion sets are planted 20 April – 10 May, 20 September – 10 October; winter onions from 20 September to 10 October. Favourable days by the moon, on the waning Moon: 22 and 26–27 April; 7 May; 20 and 28 September; 6–7 October.

When to plant carrots?

Carrots are sown 15 April – 31 May, 15–30 November; the seed germinates from 4 to 5 °C but takes 10 to 20 days. Favourable days by the moon: 17–18, 22 and 26–27 April; 7, 14 and 23–25 May; 17–18, 22 and 30 November. A winter sowing at the end of November into frozen soil gives the earliest crop.

When to plant strawberries?

Strawberries are planted 20 April – 20 May, 25 July – 10 September; the late-summer planting roots before winter and fruits the next year. Favourable days by the moon: 22 and 26–27 April; 1–2, 7, 10–11 and 18–19 May; 27–28 and 31 July; 8–9, 18–19, 23–24 and 27–28 August; 4–6 September.

When to plant cucumbers?

Cucumbers are sown in pots indoors 20 April – 5 May, directly in the greenhouse 10–25 May and outdoors 25 May – 10 June, when the soil is 15 °C. Favourable days by the moon for the outdoor sowing: 8–9 June.

Above-ground or below-ground crops: which moon?

Tradition sows crops that bear above the ground, leafy and fruiting, while the Moon waxes, from the new moon to the full moon, and sows or plants root crops, bulbs and transplants while it wanes. The last days before the new moon are for weeding and clearing.

What sign is the Moon in in February 2027?

In February 2027 the Moon moves through Sagittarius on 1–2 February, Capricorn on 3–4 February, Aquarius on 5–7 February, Pisces on 8–9 February, Aries on 10–12 February, Taurus on 13–14 February, Gemini on 15–16 February, Cancer on 17–18 February, Leo on 19–20 February, Virgo on 21–22 February, Libra on 23–24 February, Scorpio on 25–27 February, Sagittarius on 28 February. The sign table on this page gives the element, the day type and the fertility of each.

Which zodiac signs are fertile for planting?

In the gardeners' tradition the fertile signs are Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces and Taurus; Virgo, Libra and Capricorn are half-fertile; Aries, Gemini, Leo, Sagittarius and Aquarius are barren, kept for weeding and pest control. Water signs are leaf days, earth signs root days, air signs flower days, fire signs fruit days.

Does planting by the moon really work?

There is no scientific evidence that it does. A 2020 review in Agronomy found the Moon's light, gravity and tides too weak to act on a seed and no sound study showing an effect on germination or yield. Soil temperature, moisture, frost and day length decide. The calendar is a way to plan the month.

How this page is made

Moon phases and the lunar day are computed on the server with the algorithms of Jean Meeus for 12:00 Europe/Vilnius; the lunar day counts 24-hour steps from the instant of the new moon. Every day gets six ratings from seven rules: the new moon day, the full moon day and lunar days 9, 15, 23 and 29 are kept free of sowing; the first quarter favours leafy crops, the second fruiting crops, the third root crops and planting, the fourth care. The Moon's zodiac sign (tropical, at 12:00) then refines the day: water signs are leaf days, earth signs root days, air signs flower days, fire signs fruit days; a barren sign (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Sagittarius, Aquarius) holds sowing back to neutral and favours weeding; a fertile sign (Taurus, Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) favours planting. The sowing windows are ordinary horticultural dates for Lithuania; the favourable days inside each window are computed for the year shown.
