What the PRO test measures

Four abilities, twelve parts

Emotional intelligence isn't one trait but four abilities that build on each other: noticing an emotion, using it, understanding it and regulating it. The PRO test splits each into three parts, so you see not only which area gets stuck, but where exactly within it.

  1. 01Perceiving

How accurately you notice emotions in yourself and others from tone, body language and context.

    • Your own emotions
    • Other people's emotions
    • Body language and tone
  2. 02Using

Whether you can put an emotional state to use for a specific task, not just endure it.

    • Mood and task
    • Emotion in decisions
    • Energy and creativity
  3. 03Understanding

Whether you understand why an emotion arose, separating it from a person's character.

    • Causes
    • Mixed emotions
    • How emotions change
  4. 04Managing

What strategies you use to regulate your own and others' emotions.

    • Early strategies
    • Regulation in the moment
    • Others' emotions in relationships
Sample report

This is what your result looks like: profile, parts, relationships, plan

Below is a real excerpt of a report with sample answers. Yours is built from your own 36 answers.

Your profileThe Sensitive Observer

You read emotions very precisely, often before others do. The hardest part for you is what comes after: regulating an emotion at the right time, before it peaks.

The 12-part ringPerceivingUsingUnderstandingManaging

Each segment is one sub-skill. The longer it is, the stronger.

Weakest area – managing: its three parts
Early strategies22%

You usually act only once an emotion is already strong. Earlier strategies are the easiest to learn and work best.

Regulation in the moment44%

In the heat of the moment you tend to either explode or clamp down. Breath is the fastest tool you're not using yet.

Others' emotions in relationships44%

When others are upset, you tend to argue, fix or step away, rather than stay with them.

Relationships

You feel the tension first and answer too fast

In a couple and in the family you're the first to notice something is wrong. But in a conflict you reply straight away, while the emotion is at its strongest. Your rule: notice the tension, pause, then speak.

Work

You sense the team's mood before anyone else

It's a rare strength for a leader and a team member. The risk: you carry other people's tension with you. Plan hard conversations in advance, not on the spot.

  1. Day 1
Before a hard conversation: three physiological sighs

Two inhales through the nose, one long exhale through the mouth. The fastest way to lower tension.

    Physiological sigh
  2. Day 2
Plan one tense situation in advance

Choose the place, the time and your first sentence before the emotion rises.

    no tool needed
  3. Day 3
Name your emotion three times a day

Not "bad", but the exact word and intensity: irritation, anger or rage.

What a scenario looks like

Not "are you empathetic?", but real everyday situations

One of the 36 PRO scenarios. Each has four answers, and the best one isn't always last.

The science

The same model the MSCEIT is built on, for €9

Emotional intelligence was first defined as a scientific concept in 1990 by psychologists Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer. Together with David Caruso they later developed their four-ability model into the most researched emotional intelligence test, the MSCEIT.

The PRO test is built on the same four-ability model. Its 36 scenarios are written for this site and tied to real emotion-regulation strategies: choosing the situation, redirecting attention, reappraisal and adjusting the response.
