- 528 Hz is the third of the six original solfeggio tones; its syllable is Mi.
- The tradition calls it the love frequency and the miracle tone and uses it for transformation, love and harmony.
- In a study of nine adults five minutes of music tuned to 528 Hz lowered cortisol and raised oxytocin; the same kind of music at 440 Hz did not.
- In a trial with 60 patients with high blood pressure a month of daily listening to OM chanting at 528 Hz lowered pulse and blood pressure and improved sleep.
- 528 Hz is 16 cents above the note C5 of a piano; it is exactly C5 when the note A is tuned to 444 Hz.
- The claim that 528 Hz repairs DNA comes from Leonard Horowitz and has not been shown in people.
What is 528 Hz
528 Hz is a tone that vibrates 528 times a second. In air its wave is 65 centimetres long. On a piano it lies just above the C one octave above middle C: 16 cents higher, a difference a trained ear can hear and most people cannot.
In the set of solfeggio frequencies it is the third of the six original tones and carries the syllable Mi. The number was put forward in the 1970s by Joseph Puleo and became famous through the books of Leonard Horowitz, who named it the love frequency.
528 Hz also has a place in ordinary music. In the natural scale of C major built on C = 264 Hz, the scale in which A is exactly 440 Hz, the upper C is 528 Hz. So the tone is not foreign to music; it is a C from a slightly different tuning than the one a modern piano uses.
What is 528 Hz good for
In sound therapy 528 Hz is the tone of transformation. Practitioners use it when a person wants to move from tension to calm, from conflict to harmony, from self-criticism to kindness towards oneself. That is where the name love frequency comes from.
It is assigned to the solar plexus chakra, the centre of will and confidence; some schools assign it to the heart.
In practice people use it for three things.
- Stress. A few minutes of 528 Hz music during the day, to step out of tension.
- Sleep. Quiet 528 Hz music or a tone with a delta beat in the evening.
- Meditation. As the tone that attention rests on, often with a theta beat.
528 Hz frequency benefits: what studies found
528 Hz is the only solfeggio tone with studies in people, and the first of them is worth knowing in detail.
In Japan nine healthy adults, one man and eight women aged 26 to 37, listened to soothing piano music tuned to 528 Hz for five minutes. On another day they listened to the same kind of music tuned to the standard 440 Hz. Saliva was tested before and after. After the 528 Hz music cortisol, the stress hormone, fell from 0.43 to 0.25 within half an hour, and oxytocin, the hormone linked with trust and closeness, rose from 37.57 to 73.58. Tension and anxiety scores fell. After the 440 Hz music none of these changes was significant.
The study is small, and nine people are not enough to settle the question. Its value is in the comparison: the same kind of music, the same people, a different tuning, a different result.
| Measure | After 528 Hz music | After 440 Hz music |
|---|---|---|
| Cortisol in saliva | Fell significantly | No significant change |
| Oxytocin in saliva | Rose significantly | No significant change |
| Tension and anxiety score | Fell significantly | No significant change |
| Balance of the nervous system (LF/HF) | Shifted towards calm | Shifted towards calm |
528 Hz, blood pressure and sleep
The largest study was published in India in 2025. Sixty patients with stage 1 hypertension were randomly divided into two groups. One listened every day for a month to a recording of OM chanting composed at 528 Hz; the other received standard care.
After a month the listeners had a lower pulse and lower blood pressure. The variability of their heart rate showed more activity of the calming part of the nervous system. Their wellbeing and the quality of their sleep improved, and perceived stress fell.
One thing limits the conclusion. The control group listened to nothing, so the study cannot separate the frequency from the chanting itself and from the habit of sitting quietly every day. It shows that the practice helps; it does not show that 528 Hz is the reason.
528 Hz and DNA repair
The best known claim about 528 Hz is that it repairs DNA. It comes from Leonard Horowitz, who wrote that the tone is used by biochemists for that purpose. No study has shown it in people.
What exists are laboratory and animal experiments. In rats a 528 Hz sound raised the production of testosterone in brain tissue, lowered the level of reactive oxygen species and, with prolonged exposure, reduced anxiety-related behaviour. The sound in that study was 100 dB, far louder than is safe for human hearing, so its results cannot be carried over to listening at home.
The honest summary: 528 Hz has measurable effects on stress, and the DNA claim remains a claim.
528 Hz for sleep: how to listen
Searches for 528 Hz sleep music are among the most common, and the Indian study gives them some support: sleep quality improved after a month of daily listening.
A pure tone alone is too bright for falling asleep. Use the generator this way.
- Choose 528 Hz and add the delta beat of 2 Hz. With the beat you need headphones.
- Switch on the brown noise background. It softens the tone and masks sounds in the room.
- Set the volume so that the tone is barely audible and the timer to 30 minutes.
- Listen already in bed, with your eyes closed. The sound fades out by itself.
If headphones disturb your sleep, listen without the beat through a speaker placed at arm's length from the pillow.
528 Hz meditation
For meditation the tone gives attention a single object. Choose 528 Hz with the theta beat of 6 Hz and a 15-minute timer, sit upright and close your eyes.
For the first minutes breathe slowly, in for a count of four and out for a count of six. Then let the breath go and rest on the sound. When thoughts pull you away, come back to the tone.
In the tradition a 528 Hz meditation is a practice of kindness towards oneself. Many people add a short sentence they repeat silently on the out-breath.
528 Hz vs 432 Hz
The two numbers are often compared, and they are different kinds of things. 528 Hz is one tone. 432 Hz is a tuning: the pitch of the note A, from which all other notes of a piece follow.
| 528 Hz | 432 Hz | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A single solfeggio tone | A tuning of the note A |
| Note | C5 when A = 444 Hz | A4, 32 cents below standard |
| Name in the tradition | The love frequency | The natural tuning |
| Studies in people | Cortisol, oxytocin, blood pressure, sleep | Heart rate, anxiety, cortisol, sleep |
| Character of the sound | Bright, clear | Slightly lower and softer than standard tuning |
You do not have to choose. Music tuned to A = 444 Hz contains the note 528 Hz; music tuned to A = 432 Hz does not. For a calm evening many people prefer the lower, softer 432 Hz music, and for a short reset during the day the brighter 528 Hz.
528 Hz pure tone or 528 Hz music
A pure tone is exact and plain: one frequency, nothing else. It suits short sessions, work with a tuning fork and meditation on sound.
Music tuned to 528 Hz is easier to listen to for a long time, and the studies used music and chanting, not a bare tone. If you want the effect the studies measured, quiet music is the closer match; the generator gives you the tone itself, with a beat and a background to soften it.
528 Hz tuning fork: how to use it
A 528 Hz tuning fork is the most sold of the solfeggio forks.
- Strike it on a rubber activator or on the knee, never on a hard surface.
- Hold an unweighted fork a few centimetres from the ear and listen until the sound fades, 20 to 40 seconds.
- Place the stem of a weighted fork on the breastbone or on the solar plexus, the area the tradition links with this tone.
- Repeat three to five times with slow breathing between the strikes.
Is 528 Hz safe
No harm specific to 528 Hz has been described. As with any sound, hearing is affected by loudness and duration: the World Health Organization considers up to 80 dB safe for 40 hours a week.
A pure tone tires the ear sooner than music. If you get a headache or a ringing in the ears, lower the volume or stop. With a binaural beat use headphones, do not listen while driving, and if you have epilepsy talk to your doctor first.
Questions people ask
What is 528 Hz good for?
Sound therapy uses 528 Hz for transformation, love and harmony. In studies music tuned to 528 Hz lowered cortisol and tension, and a month of daily listening improved blood pressure and sleep.
Why is 528 Hz called the love frequency?
The name was given by Leonard Horowitz, who popularised the tone. In one study 528 Hz music raised oxytocin, the hormone linked with trust and closeness.
Does 528 Hz repair DNA?
This is a claim by Leonard Horowitz. No study has shown it in people.
Does 528 Hz help you sleep?
In a trial with 60 patients a month of daily listening to OM chanting at 528 Hz improved sleep quality. For sleep use a quiet tone with a delta beat, a brown noise background and a timer.
What note is 528 Hz?
It is 16 cents above C5 of a piano tuned to A = 440 Hz, and exactly C5 when A is tuned to 444 Hz.
What is the difference between 528 Hz and 432 Hz?
528 Hz is a single tone. 432 Hz is a tuning of the note A, used instead of 440 Hz. Both have been studied in people.
How long should I listen to 528 Hz?
In the first study five minutes were enough to lower cortisol. Start with 5 minutes of the pure tone and extend to 15 or 20.
Do I need headphones for 528 Hz?
Not for a pure tone. You need them only when you add a binaural beat.

The generator makes the sound in the browser (Web Audio). On this page it starts with a pure sine tone of 528 Hz. With a binaural beat the left channel carries 528 Hz and the right channel 528 Hz plus the beat. The nearest note is calculated for equal temperament with A4 = 440 Hz; the distance is given in cents, hundredths of a semitone.
