- 741 Hz is the fifth of the six original solfeggio tones; its syllable is Sol.
- Sound therapy uses 741 Hz for cleansing, clear thinking, self-expression and solving problems.
- Practitioners assign 741 Hz to the throat chakra.
- 741 Hz is 2 cents above the note F♯5 (739.99 Hz), closer to a piano key than any other solfeggio tone.
- No controlled studies in people have tested 741 Hz on its own.
- 741, 852 and 963 Hz are the most piercing tones of the solfeggio set, so a low volume matters more with them than with the low tones.
What is 741 Hz
741 Hz is a tone that vibrates 741 times a second. Its wave in air is 46 centimetres long.
Among the nine solfeggio tones it is the one that sits best on a piano. The key F♯5 sounds at 739.99 Hz, and 741 Hz is only 2 cents higher. A cent is a hundredth of a semitone. In practice 741 Hz is F♯5.
In the set it is the seventh tone from the bottom and the fifth of the six original ones, with the syllable Sol. The six numbers were put forward by Joseph Puleo in the 1970s and published in 1999.
The number has its place in the patterns of the set.
- The digits add up to 3: 7 + 4 + 1 = 12, and 1 + 2 = 3.
- 174, 417 and 741 are made of the same three digits. Move the first digit of 174 to the end and you get 741.
- The step from 639 to 741 is 102, one of only two steps in the set that are not 111. From 741 to 852 the step is 111 again.
741 Hz meaning: what it is used for, and the throat chakra
In sound therapy 741 Hz is the tone of expression. The tradition gives it four uses.
- Cleansing: in the tradition the tone clears away what is no longer needed.
- Clear thinking: a short session before work that needs a clear head.
- Self-expression: a few minutes with the tone before you speak, write or sing.
- Solving problems: a pause with the tone when you are stuck on a question.
Practitioners assign 741 Hz to the throat chakra, the centre the tradition links with the voice and with saying what you mean. The chakra and the name of the tone point the same way: expression.
741 Hz frequency benefits: what research exists
No controlled studies in people have tested 741 Hz on its own. The benefits listed above are the uses the tradition gives the tone.
The closest study was done on animals. In Brazil zebrafish were stressed by 24 hours of light: their memory got worse and their cortisol rose. Exposure to solfeggio-frequency music reversed both. It is a study of fish and of music, not of people and not of a single tone.
In people the solfeggio tone that has been tested is 528 Hz. In a small Japanese study of nine adults five minutes of music tuned to 528 Hz lowered cortisol and tension, while the same kind of music at 440 Hz did not. In an Indian trial with 60 patients a month of daily listening to OM chanting at 528 Hz lowered pulse and blood pressure and improved sleep. The control group in that trial listened to nothing, so the frequency cannot be separated from the daily quiet listening.
The widest evidence is about music as such: a review of 104 randomised trials with 9,617 participants found that music interventions reduce stress. Binaural beats, which you can add to the tone, showed a medium overall effect on memory, attention, anxiety and pain perception in a meta-analysis of 22 studies.
How to listen to 741 Hz
741 Hz is one of the three highest tones of the set, and high pure tones are the most piercing. Every step below serves one aim: a quiet, short, comfortable session.
- Turn the volume of your device almost to zero, choose 741 Hz and press Play.
- Raise the volume slowly and stop as soon as you hear the tone. Quieter is better than louder.
- Switch on the brown noise background from the start. It softens the tone.
- Set the timer to 5 minutes.
- Sit upright if you listen before work. Lie down if you listen to rest.
- Keep a speaker at arm's length or further. With headphones keep the volume lower still.
Move to 15 minutes only if 5 minutes leave your ears and head comfortable.
741 Hz for focus and 741 Hz meditation
The two uses need different settings. For focus the tone is a short signal before work. For meditation it is the sound your attention rests on.
| Focus | Meditation | |
|---|---|---|
| Tone | 741 Hz | 741 Hz |
| Binaural beat | None | Theta, 6 Hz: left ear 741 Hz, right ear 747 Hz |
| Background | Brown noise | Brown noise |
| Timer | 5 minutes | 15 minutes |
| Position | Sitting at the desk | Sitting upright, eyes closed |
| Headphones | Not needed | Needed |
For focus, listen before the task. During the five minutes decide what exactly you will do first, then let the sound fade and start.
For meditation, breathe slowly for the first minutes, in for a count of four and out for a count of six, then rest on the sound. The tradition links the tone with self-expression, so you can use the session to find the words for something you need to say.
The faster beats that studies used for concentration are described on the page about binaural beats for focus.
741 Hz for sleep
People search for 741 Hz and sleep, so here is a straight answer. For sleep the tradition uses 174 Hz and 528 Hz, not 741 Hz. 741 Hz is a high, bright tone, and a bare pure tone is too bright for falling asleep.
If you still want 741 Hz in the evening, soften it as much as the generator allows.
- Add the delta beat of 2 Hz: left ear 741 Hz, right ear 743 Hz. With the beat you need headphones.
- Switch on the brown noise background.
- Set the volume so that the tone is barely audible under the noise.
- Set the timer to 30 minutes. The sound fades out by itself.
If the tone still feels sharp, move the slider down to 174 Hz and keep the rest of the setting. The page about binaural beats for sleep explains the delta beat.
741 Hz binaural beats
741 Hz is below 1000 Hz, the upper limit for the tones of a binaural beat, so it works as a carrier. The left ear hears 741 Hz, the right ear 741 Hz plus the beat, and the brain hears the difference as a slow pulse.
| Beat | Left ear | Right ear | Used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delta, 2 Hz | 741 Hz | 743 Hz | Sleep |
| Theta, 6 Hz | 741 Hz | 747 Hz | Meditation |
| Alpha, 10 Hz | 741 Hz | 751 Hz | Calm, easing tension |
Headphones are required. Through a speaker the two tones mix in the air and the beat is lost.
741 Hz pure tone or 741 Hz music
With 741 Hz the distance between tone and music is smaller than with any other solfeggio frequency. 741 Hz is practically F♯5, so a piece in standard tuning that contains this note already contains a sound 2 cents away from 741 Hz. No retuning is needed.
Choose the pure tone for a short, exact session of 5 minutes. Choose music when you want to listen longer: it is less tiring, and the research on stress was done with music and chanting, not with a bare tone.
741 Hz tuning fork: how to use it
A tuning fork gives the tone without a screen and without electricity. It sounds for 20 to 40 seconds after each strike.
- Strike it on a rubber activator or on the knee, never on a hard surface. Metal on metal damages the fork and adds overtones.
- Hold an unweighted fork a few centimetres from the ear. The tone is high, so strike gently the first time.
- Place the stem of a weighted fork on the top of the breastbone, just below the throat. The tradition places 741 Hz at the throat chakra.
- Let the sound fade, take a few slow breaths and strike again. Three strikes are enough for one session.
741 Hz benefits and risks: is it safe
The benefits are those the tradition names: cleansing, clear thinking, self-expression. The risks are those of any sound, and they depend on volume and time, not on the number 741.
No study has described a harm specific to a solfeggio frequency. The World Health Organization considers sound of up to 80 dB safe for 40 hours a week.
741 Hz needs more care than the low tones for one reason: it is piercing. A pure tone is more tiring than music at the same volume, and the high tones are the most piercing of the set.
| What you notice | What to do |
|---|---|
| Headache or irritation | Lower the volume or stop |
| Ringing in the ears | Stop; next time listen more quietly and for a shorter time |
| You have tinnitus or are sensitive to sound | Start with 174 or 285 Hz at a very low volume |
| You use a binaural beat | Headphones on, never while driving |
| You have epilepsy | Talk to your doctor before you use a binaural beat |
741 Hz compared with 639 Hz and 852 Hz
The neighbours of 741 Hz are 639 Hz below and 852 Hz above.
| 639 Hz | 741 Hz | 852 Hz | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Syllable | Fa | Sol | La |
| Name in the tradition | Connection | Expression | Intuition |
| Used for | Relationships, reconciliation | Cleansing, clear thinking, self-expression | Inner order, intuition |
| Chakra | Heart | Throat | Third eye |
| Nearest note | D♯5, 46 cents higher | F♯5, 2 cents higher | G♯5, 44 cents higher |
| Wavelength in air | 0.54 m | 0.46 m | 0.40 m |
| Step from the tone below | 111 | 102 | 111 |
In the tradition the three follow one another: connection with others, then expression, then intuition. For work that needs a clear head practitioners choose 741 Hz. If it feels too sharp, 639 Hz is lower and easier on the ear.

The generator makes the sound in the browser (Web Audio). On this page it starts with a pure sine tone of 741 Hz. With a binaural beat the left channel carries 741 Hz and the right channel 741 Hz plus the beat. The nearest note is calculated for equal temperament with A4 = 440 Hz; the distance is given in cents, hundredths of a semitone.
