- The personal purpose is the sum of the sky line (B + D) and the earth line (A + C).
- The social purpose is the sum of the father's line and the mother's line in the family square.
- The spiritual purpose is personal plus social, and it can only be 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 or 21.
- The planetary purpose is social plus spiritual and is read once the first three have been lived.
- The author of the method described eight levels; later authors called their final numbers the four purposes.
What purpose means in the Destiny Matrix
The method starts from a simple idea: happiness is living out your inner purpose. You check it not by how you feel but by results in three areas – money, health and relationships with people. When all three work, you are on your own road; when all three stall at once, you have most likely drifted away from your task.
The author of the method described the calculation as eight levels of destiny: the first is the sky, the second the earth, the third their sum (the personal level), the fourth the father's line, the fifth the mother's line, the sixth their sum (the family or social level), the seventh the divine level (third + sixth) and the eighth a mission for people (sixth + seventh). Later authors kept only the resulting numbers and called them the four purposes: personal, social, spiritual and planetary. One source covers just the first three; another calls the spiritual one the general, or guardian, purpose.
Purposes do not predict events. The chart shows what is built into a person and at what age which task comes to the front. Each of the four numbers is one of the 22 arcana and is read the same way as in any other point: it has a plus and a minus, and the work is to bring the energy into its plus.
The lines the purposes are built from
Every calculation rests on four lines of the chart. Two run through the personal (diagonal) square and two through the family (straight) square.
Each line is the sum of its two outer corners, reduced by adding the digits if it comes to more than 22. That is the line's "third number": one source defines the personal purpose directly as the third energy of the earth line plus the third energy of the sky line.
- The sky line is the vertical of the personal square, from point B (month, top) to point D (bottom). Sky = B + D. It stands for spiritual tasks: personal growth, intuition, energy potential.
- The earth line is the horizontal of the personal square, from point A (day, left) to point C (year, right). Earth = A + C. It stands for material tasks: work, money, health, relationships, carrying the family on.
- The father's line is the diagonal of the family square from the top left corner to the bottom right. Father's line = TL + BR. It describes masculine traits, relations with men and the task of the father's family.
- The mother's line is the other diagonal, from the top right corner to the bottom left. Mother's line = TR + BL. It describes feminine nature, relations with women and the task of the mother's family.
How to calculate your purpose by date of birth
You only need the main points of the chart. The core rule of the method: anything above 22 is reduced by adding its digits (25 → 7, 38 → 11). You do not subtract 22 – some online calculators do, and their purposes come out different. Reduce at every step, so each new sum is made of numbers that are already reduced.
- Find the points of the personal square: A is the day of birth, B the month, C the sum of the digits of the year, D = A + B + C.
- Find the corners of the family square: top left TL = A + B, top right TR = B + C, bottom right BR = C + D, bottom left BL = D + A.
- Work out the sky (B + D) and the earth (A + C). Personal purpose = sky + earth.
- Work out the father's line (TL + BR) and the mother's line (TR + BL). Social purpose = father's line + mother's line.
- Spiritual purpose = personal + social. Check the result: only 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 and 21 are possible. Any other number means a mistake in one of the earlier steps.
- Planetary purpose = social + spiritual.
The personal purpose: finding yourself, 20 to 40
The personal purpose joins the sky and the earth, the spiritual and the material. Its point is to grow in both worlds at the same time. The sources call the years from 20 to 40 the search for yourself: getting to know your character and talents, your strong and dark sides, learning to build relationships, set priorities and hold boundaries, starting a family and having children. One description adds that in this period life tests a person on basic human qualities: whether they are able to lie, steal or betray.
Leaning too far either way gets in the way. People who go only into the spiritual and neglect work and money, and people who live only for material things without listening to themselves, both feel that something is always missing and that they are split inside. The goal of the period is to bring both the sky and the earth into their plus. One source adds that the energy of point C is given as a gift for fulfilling the first purpose: if a person misses their mission, events tied to that energy go into the minus.
The signs of an unlived personal purpose are described quite concretely: between 35 and 45 health problems begin, money runs short, business stalls, relationships fall apart, life gets dull and you want to "run away from your own life". The famous midlife crisis, in this logic, comes to those who "failed the exam" of their first purpose. Passing it means accepting your number and working out how to live it as fully as possible.
Overlaps are read separately. If the personal purpose matches the karmic tail, living your purpose also pays off the karmic debt. If it matches the family programs or the social purpose, then by coming to yourself you also help your family line.
Worked example: the purposes for 23.06.1992
| Point | How it is counted | In the example |
|---|---|---|
| Sky line | B + D | 11 · Strength |
| Earth line | A + C | 8 · Justice |
| Personal purpose · 20–40 | sky + earth | 19 · The Sun |
| Father's line | 10 + 50 | 19 · The Sun |
| Mother's line | 30 + 70 | 19 · The Sun |
| Social purpose · 40–60 | father + mother | 11 · Strength |
| Spiritual purpose · 60+ | personal + social | 3 · The Empress |
| Planetary purpose | social + spiritual | 14 · Temperance |
Points of the personal square: A = 5 (day 23 → 2 + 3), B = 6 (June), C = 21 (1 + 9 + 9 + 2), D = 5 (5 + 6 + 21 = 32 → 3 + 2). Corners of the family square: TL = 11, TR = 9 (27 → 9), BR = 8 (26 → 8), BL = 10.
Sky: B + D = 6 + 5 = 11 (Strength). Earth: A + C = 5 + 21 = 26 → 8 (Justice). Personal purpose: 11 + 8 = 19, The Sun. Until 40 this person's task is to learn to shine for many: to lead, to take on large-scale work and not to close up around one loved one, or all that power turns inwards and burns.
Father's line: TL + BR = 11 + 8 = 19. Mother's line: TR + BL = 9 + 10 = 19. Both families carry the same energy of The Sun. Social purpose: 19 + 19 = 38 → 11, Strength. From 40 to 60 the task is to build inner strength, courage and leadership, to look after the body and to help others do the same. The family force F = 11 + 9 + 8 + 10 = 38 → 11 equals the social purpose, as it should.
Spiritual purpose: 19 + 11 = 30 → 3, The Empress. Three is on the list of possible values, so the sum is right. It is Muladhara: the main spiritual task is family, having and raising children; it can also be lived as a teacher or mentor. With this number it matters not to get stuck in the material alone.
Planetary purpose: 11 + 3 = 14, Temperance: bringing harmony into the lives of others, being a peacemaker and a support. Here it does not match point D (5). Note one overlap as well: the personal purpose (19) repeats the number of both family lines, so the task "for yourself" and the family's task speak through one energy.

The spiritual purpose: why only 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 or 21
The spiritual purpose is personal plus social. It is also called the divine or the general purpose: the search for a path to God, keeping the soul clean and being able to give thanks for every chance to correct what can still be corrected. Turning away from it leads first of all to spiritual decline. One description links this energy to the abilities that open most easily through it: intuition, prophetic dreams, reading signs along the way, and practices such as meditation and prayer.
It affects a person all life and is tested every day, but it settles for good after 60 and does not change after that. If the first two purposes have been lived, it arrives in its plus as a reward: a calm old age and the right people and circumstances. If not, it shows up as a lesson.
There are only seven possible values, and each is tied to its own chakra. That tells you which way not to lean too far: with 3, 6 or 9 do not forget spiritual growth, with 15, 18 or 21 do not sink entirely into the spiritual, and with 12 in its plus the balance is usually there already:
- 3 – Muladhara: having and raising children, building a family.
- 6 – Svadhisthana: creating, earning from your creative work, being among people; fixating on money blocks the creative channel.
- 9 – Manipura: passing on spiritual knowledge, taking responsibility for others, becoming a teacher; without that comes loneliness.
- 12 – Anahata: helping others build harmonious relationships; otherwise the victim role, complaining and blaming.
- 15 – Vishuddha: speaking to people about love, passing on knowledge directly or through creative work; material wellbeing comes as the reward.
- 18 – Ajna: studying the unusual and what is not open to everyone, growing spiritually and bringing it to people; otherwise fears, apathy, escape from reality.
- 21 – Sahasrara: doing something global for humanity; a shift to the purely material brings hardship and illness.
The planetary purpose: a mission for many people
The planetary purpose is social plus spiritual. In the original eight levels it is the highest mission for people: carrying your gifts and skills further and working on projects that reach beyond your family and team. It shows whether a person is capable of large undertakings that leave a big mark, through which energy they can influence many people, and which principles to hold to when they speak to a large audience.
It is lived when you work not only towards your own goals but towards those of your team, your organisation and even your country. It is read mainly after the first three have been lived, and not everyone gets there – that is normal. For people in helping professions it is always read. It also shows how a person can change the society around them: having received abilities, they are meant to give them back to people. One source notes that the planetary number often matches point D, the main karmic task; in that case working through that task is itself the road to the mission.
Common mistakes and what to do with your purposes
A practical order: first find your personal number and read how its arcana looks in the plus and in the minus. Compare it with what is happening right now with your money, health and relationships – that is where you see whether the energy is in its plus. Under 40, this is your main work. After 40, add the social number and look at which people and situations come to you through the father's and the mother's families. Keep the spiritual number as a guide for the whole of life, and the planetary one as the direction your work grows in once the first tasks are behind you.
- Subtracting 22 instead of adding the digits. It changes every sum, and the spiritual purpose falls outside the seven possible values.
- Adding unreduced numbers. The sky, the earth and the father's and mother's lines are reduced first and only then added together.
- Mixing up the diagonals of the family square. The father's line starts in the top left corner, the mother's line in the top right.
- Treating age as a hard border. Any purpose can be lived earlier and you move on to the next; the 20–40 and 40–60 limits apply to those who have not closed the previous task. Until 18 a child helps the parents live out their tasks, and from 18 to 20 there are no tasks of one's own yet.
- Jumping straight to the spiritual or planetary purpose. An unlived personal purpose does not disappear: that work passes on to the social and spiritual purposes, and the person cannot cope with those either.

Questions people ask
How do I find my purpose by date of birth?
Build your Destiny Matrix chart from your date of birth and find four numbers. The personal purpose is the sky line (B + D) plus the earth line (A + C). The social purpose is the father's line plus the mother's line from the family square. The spiritual purpose is personal plus social, the planetary is social plus spiritual. Any number over 22 is reduced by adding its digits. The calculator on this page does it all for you.
How many purposes are there in the Destiny Matrix?
Usually four: personal, social, spiritual and planetary. The author of the method described eight levels – sky, earth, personal, father's line, mother's line, family (social), divine and a mission for people. The four purposes are the resulting numbers of that scheme. One source covers only three of them, and another calls the spiritual purpose the general one.
What is the personal purpose in the Destiny Matrix?
It is the sum of the sky and the earth, of spiritual and material tasks. It is lived roughly from 20 to 40 and is called finding yourself: understanding your character and talents, building relationships, starting a family, learning to balance the inner and the outer. When it is lived, money, health and relationships come into their plus.
What does the social purpose mean?
It is the father's line plus the mother's line, the task of both families, which moves into society between 40 and 60. In these years a person builds a career, earns from their skills, settles family situations and shares experience. The people who come into your life mirror the energies of your father's and mother's families. Its value matches the family force.
Why can the spiritual purpose only be 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 or 21?
That is how the sums of the chart work: done correctly, personal plus social always gives one of these seven numbers, so they serve as a check. If you got 7 or 14, for example, something went wrong – 22 was subtracted instead of adding digits, unreduced numbers were added, or the lines were mixed up. Each of the seven numbers is tied to its own chakra.
What is the planetary purpose?
It is social plus spiritual, a mission for many people. It shows whether a person is capable of large projects and through which energy they can influence a large number of people. It is read once the first three have been lived, and not everyone reaches it. It often matches point D, the main karmic task.
Can you fulfil your purpose earlier than the age given?
Yes. The age periods – 20 to 40 for the personal purpose and 40 to 60 for the social one – describe when a task becomes the main one, not a ban on living it sooner. If you close the personal purpose before 40, you move on to the next. The limits matter for those who run late: the unfinished task catches up and piles onto the next one.
What happens if you do not fulfil your personal purpose?
The sources list signs between 35 and 45: health problems, a lack of money, trouble in business, broken relationships, boredom and a wish to run away from your own life. This is what gets called a midlife crisis. The unfinished work passes on to the social and spiritual purposes, so a person is brought back to the first task again and again.
What does it mean if my purpose matches my karmic tail?
If the arcana of the personal purpose matches the karmic tail, then by living your purpose you also work off the karmic debt. If the personal purpose matches the family programs or the social purpose, then by coming to yourself you also help your family line. Such overlaps strengthen the task rather than change its meaning, so it is worth comparing your personal purpose with the karmic tail and the family square.
How is the spiritual purpose linked to the chakras?
Each of the seven possible values matches a chakra: 3 Muladhara, 6 Svadhisthana, 9 Manipura, 12 Anahata, 15 Vishuddha, 18 Ajna, 21 Sahasrara. With 3, 6 and 9 it matters not to forget spiritual growth; with 15, 18 and 21, not to sink entirely into the spiritual and forget real life. With 12 in its plus the balance is usually there already.

The social purpose: your place in society, 40 to 60
The social purpose is made of the two family lines, which is why it is also called the family purpose: the task is to reconcile and unite the father's and the mother's families. In the second half of life it moves outwards, into society. The main questions of the period are what society expects from you, what you owe it and what you receive in return.
From 40 to 60 a person shows themselves in society, builds a career, settles family situations and earns from the skills gathered earlier. The men and women who enter your life in these years mirror the energies of your father's and mother's families and bring their lessons: healthy relationships, resisting manipulation, leadership. When this is lived well, people turn up who cooperate and help. If by 40 you have not learned to build relationships and have hurt people, society will not give you money.
The sources also describe the price of an unfulfilled task: life energy drains quickly, illnesses appear and the person "ages before your eyes". The other way round, people who "age beautifully" usually work a lot, often as volunteers, and stay lively – these are the ones who found their second purpose.
A useful cross-check: the family force F (the sum of the four corners of the family square) comes out equal to the social purpose after reduction. According to one source, it switches on fully once the family tasks are resolved.
